Here's what happened last year
Ten orphans from one of the world’s poorest regions are guaranteed a roof over their heads for another year, thanks to Yorkshire trekkers and charity New Futures Nepal.
Over 250 walkers took part in the 2008 Harrison Trek for Children in Nepal at Castle Howard for UK charity New Futures Nepal, which has a trustee based in Yorkshire, earlier this summer. The latest fundraising figure has been confirmed this week at nearly £14,000.
New Futures Nepal is charity run entirely by volunteers based in the UK who have been inspired to give something back to the people of Nepal by the establishment and management of two children’s homes in Nepal and Northern India.
The family event was sponsored by Yorkshire developer S Harrison Developments Ltd and involved a choice of three walks ranging from two miles to fifteen miles in and around the grounds of Castle Howard.
The Harrison Trek for children in Nepal was a resounding success. That was the verdict of the 300 or so people who gathered on an overcast mid-summer's day in the spectacular setting of Castle Howard and of the 250+ hardy walkers who took the challenge to walk 2, 5 or 15 miles to raise funds.
Here's a selection of pictures of the day. On behalf of all at Harrison, a huge thanks to those who took part - corporate teams and individuals - and to the charity and the Ghurkas for the excellent event organisation.

Nepal Trek
2008 charity trek launch at Castle Howard Harrison gives £10,000 support for children in Nepal

New Futures Nepal was established in 2003 by a group of walkers from the UK who were struck by the levels of deprivation they saw in the country when they visited on trekking break. Inspired by their Nepalese guide, Ram Thapa, they decided to support the setting up of a home for disabled and deprived children in Kathmandu. Since then their work has gone from strength to strength.
Says Colin Culley, former Yorkshire head teacher and now a trustee of the charity:
"We have ambitious plans to extend our work in Nepal and need all the support we can get. Harrison's decision to support us in 2008 has provided a tremendous boost. The idea is that their funding will enable us to set up an event which we hope will become an integral part of the Yorkshire social and charity calendar, raising funds year after year to support our cause. We are also very grateful to the Howard family for providing the setting for the event."
"So many charities now organise trekking events in Nepal to raise funds for UK causes so we thought it would be novel to stage a UK-based trek to raise money for Nepal. Our event is totally accessible to all and promises to provide a fun day out into the bargain."
Says Martyn Harrison, "We have a long tradition of charity support, most notably with St Catherine's Hospice in Scarborough, and we plan to maintain these links. We have been thoroughly impressed by the work of New Futures Nepal and are delighted to be working with them in 2008."
